Description: For sale is a Seiko 6139-6002, what's referred to by collectors as the "Pogue", in honor of the NASA astronaut Col. William Pogue. This specific model differs slightly from the "True Pogue" reference 6139-6005. A truly unique watch with a rich history that was overlooked until recent years. Beautiful combination of a orange/yellow sunburst dial, lighter yellow inner bezel, and a "Pepsi" blue and red bezel. Also important, the 6139 movement is the first automatic chronograph in history. Seiko managed to do that before Zenith's El Primero or the Chronomatic cal. 11, both movements that have elevated to mythical status. To the best of my knowledge and from asking experts in forums, I believe the watch is all original. The only thing that I know for a fact that has been changed is the chronograph minute hand, since I had it replaced by my watchmaker. The dial is a "6030R" variant that matches the production date, sub dial has no concentric rings, and the text and spacing seems consistent with known original models I've compared it to. The 6139B movement also matches the production date. A couple years back this specific model got a big dip in price, which made sellers follow the gold rush. Dials, hands, and bezels are available plenty as aftermarket, so a lot of the watches on sale are a mash up of these parts. Of course, none of the cheap parts are as well built as the original or even if they are, it's hard to match it exactly. The H-Link bracelet has 6 links on one side with 2 of them removable, and 5 on the other with 1 removable. It measures 15.4cm (6") from lug to lug and it should fit a wrist circumference of up to 18cm (7"). Links aren't easy to find and sometimes it's easier buying whole bracelets in auction just to get a few links. I imagine there's also aftermarket links for these, but that's something I haven't explored personally. It's clean with a beautiful sunburst pattern. Printing is intact. Lume on the indexes is intact, but has developed some dark spots. Lume on the hands is all there. It shines bright but loses the charge quickly, both on the indexes and hands. Inner bezel is clean and rotates via the crown. Outer bezel has marks and little scratches. Mineral crystal is clean all around except a little missing chunk on the edge exactly at 6 o'clock. The case is in pretty decent condition considering the age. It has light scratches and little dings all around. The case is sharp and retains the original brushed finish, so I don't think it has been polished. Case back has a few tool marks. Stamp is sharp and intact. Crown and pushers are all in good condition and I believe original to the watch. The bracelet has little scuffs and scratches all around, so I don't think it has been polished and retains the original finish. It is flexible, something I imagine was the case even when brand new, but even more after decades of wear. The logo on the clasp is sharp. The movement has been serviced recently so it's keeping decent time for a 50 years old watch. Time setting is smooth and so is rotating the inner bezel. Day moves by pressing the crown gently, while both day and date move by pressing the crown deeper. It's a bit quirky and needs some getting used to, but it works well once you do. Chronograph starts, stops and resets correctly, and the minute counter also works. The chronograph reset pusher is a bit hard to press and needs quite some force compared to the start/stop pusher. Timegrapher results show that it's gaining 16 to 23 seconds per day depending on position, with a medium amplitude and a very low beat error. The watch went through a basic cleaning and oiling service, but no parts were replaced. +20 seconds aren't bad for a vintage watch, but aren't great either. What the service made sure is that it will run like that for years to come and not damage the movement's delicate parts any further. Additionally, please check the photos carefully and don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions. Timegrapher ResultsAll the results measured with a Weishi 1000, on a full wind and the lift angle set to 54.5 degrees. Face up: +22 s/d, 200 amplitude, 0.2ms beat errorFace forward: +16 s/d, 194 amplitude, 0.2ms beat errorFace down: +23 s/d, 190 amplitude, 0.2ms beat error Movement ServiceThe movement was serviced on October 2024. It was disassembled, cleaned, oiled, and reassembled by an independent watchmaker with 25+ years of experience. WaterproofThe watch has no water proof rating, but I imagine it's 30m (3 ATM), and that means at most you can wash your hands while wearing it or use it under rain. In no circumstances should it be used under the shower or for swimming. The watch should be tested by a watchmaker and any gaskets replaced to make sure its water resistance is in spec. ReturnsReturns are not accepted unless the watch is grossly misrepresented. Please contact me before buying if you have questions. ShippingThe package will be shipped within 3 working days via International Standard Shipping. It should take between 2-3 weeks to arrive depending on your location. You will be provided a tracking number as soon as shipment is handled. I will not be liable for any customs delays or fees on international orders. Please contact me if you have any questions about shipping. ResponsibilityI am fully responsible for the current state of the watch and any major defects I have missed or failed to describe. If that happens, please contact me and we'll discuss the best course of action. I think myself as a reasonable person, and I'm sure we'll find an approach that works for both parties. However, I will not be responsible for any defects on the watch days, weeks, or months after the purchase, either by mishandling or not.
