SGC 5 - 1940 Play Ball # 86 Harry Gumbert New York Giants

Description: An SGC graded EX 5 - 1940 Play Ball card of Harry Gumbert of the New York Giants. 1940 Play Ball set features 240 different cards highlighting active players of the day as well as many retired baseball greats. The set includes many Hall of Fame players and even a card of the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox. Card numbers 121-180 can be found with two different ads at the bottom on card backs. The first advertises the Play Ball Baseball series, while the other advertises the SUPERMAN set that was yet to be released. Some collectors are willing to pay a small premium for the cards featuring the SUPERMAN ads on the back, but most of the major price guides do not mention different values. This example has no creasing, bold printing, nice focus, good centering and clean borders. The corners are consistent with those found on most EXMT/EXMT+ examples, with the exception of more wear on the upper left and lower right corners. The printing on the front is shifted slightly to the bottom, but the card still displays well. There is some toning on both sides (not uncommon with 1940 Play Ball cards). On the back of the card, there is a light discoloration near the player's last name, but it does not interfere with any of the printing. Aside from the toning and discoloration, the back is clean with bold printing. Even with the flaws, this is still a nice looking card for the grade.
