Description: Sholes & Glidden Typewriter, serial # 4238: circa: 1878:The Industrial Revolution was in full form and over 600,000 new patents were issued. Many argue that the single most significant innovation of the 19th century was one of three inventions, Edison’s light bulb, the telephone or the S&G typewriter, the first typewriter. Thereby making the S&G a very historically important typewriter. This machine appears complete but is not operating correctly. All the keys, type and wooden key stems are present and they all correctly strike the platen and return to rest on their own but the carriage does not advance when the keys or space bar are struck. It does have its original wooden feed roller bar but it is not attached. There is paint loss, some tarnish and worn or faded pin stripping. We are estimating the condition rating on this S&G at 3,3 but with some professional restoration could easily be enhanced to 2,2. This machine is available here in Florida for inspection or more specific and detailed photos are available on request.Analysis of dating and factory history of this machine: It is generally believed there were less than 5,000 S&G typewriters made in the first five (5) years of production. This machine is serial number 4,238 and it is believed the last S&G made in 1877 was #3876. Thereby, thru interpolation, we estimate this machine was most likely manufactured in 1878, the same year The Perfected Typewriter No 2 was introduced. It does have a Remington sunburst with the image of a Remington Standard typewriter which is generally thought to have been first introduced in 1885 which may indicate this specific S&G typewriter is the Remington No 1 introduced in 1888 as a low-cost alternative. The designation No 1 was never on the machine and is only referred to in period advertisements. It still is likely to have been manufactured in 1878 and remained as unsold, and perhaps work in process inventory, until the 1888 Remington No 1 sales promotion.
