It looks like she used a black marker for the writing. Tasha Tudor was a prolific illustrator of children's books who passed away in 2008. She was fond of the Corgi dog breed, and used them in many illustrations she created. Here, the family visited by Santa has Corgis, and in at least one of the illustrations a Corgi is smoking a pipe.
