Listening In" Memories of Glens Falls 1755-1931 In 1931 the Post Star ran a contest asking for memories of the Village of Glens Falls. Winning contestants received a five dollar gold piece and had their recollections published in the newspaper. Through his weekly "Listening In" column, local historian and Post Star editor Dennis F. O'Connell wrote companion pieces that traced the evolution of buildings and businesses in each featured section of the city. The result was an intriguing series of articles that reached back to Abraham Wing, first settler of Wings Falls, soon to be known as Glens Falls, "America's Hometown" and "the Empire City of the Empire State." Incorporated as a village in 1839 and a city in 1908, Glens Falls has been a leading industrial and manufacturing center in New York State, beginning with lumber and paper mills, lime and cement plants, shirts and collar manufacturers, carriage and stage coach builders. Glens Falls City Historian Wayne Wright discovered the series of articles while doing research for the 2008 Centennial. He realized the material filled in a time period that had not been covered in other books about Glens Falls. Wayne tracked down the photographic collection of William Wallace Kennedy, who lived and worked in Glens Falls from 1880 to 1900. Wayne compiled the best of the articles with Kennedy's previously unpublished photographs for a wonderful look at the evolution of Glens Falls from a settlement that started before the American Revolution into the busy city we know today.
