Chapters: Preface, Les Debuts, La Guerre de 1870-1871, La Nouvelle Armee, Les Armées Étrangères, A Travers L'Histoire de l'Armée Française, Pages Humoristiques. FROM WIKIPEDIA: Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille (Paris 5 October 1848 – 23 December 1912 Paris) was a French academic painter and military artist noted for his precision and realistic detail. He was regarded as the "semi-official artist of the French army". Detaille enlisted in the 8th Mobile Bataillon of the French Army when the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870; by November he was seeing and experiencing the realities of war. This experience allowed him to produce his famed portraits of soldiers and historically accurate depictions of military manoeuvres, uniforms, and military life in general. He eventually became the official painter of the battles. He published a book called L'Armée Française in 1885, which contains over 300 line drawings and 20 color reproductions of his works. In 1912, Detaille created new uniforms for the French army. They were never adopted by the Minister of War, but the blue-gray greatcoats would influence later French World War I uniforms, and the Adrian helmet was heavily influenced by his designs. During his life, he had amassed an impressive collection of military uniforms and artifacts and bequeathed to the Musée de l'Armée in Paris following his death. Marius Vachon began a career as a journalist when he entered La France , a nationalist newspaper in 1872 run by Émile de Girardin : he would end up secretary general. Towards the end of the 1870s, he began to publish works on French monuments destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War . In 1882, with L'Ancien Hôtel de ville de Paris , he began a series of studies on Renaissance architecture. Vachon is also the author of several books on art schools and artists in Europe (and especially in France). Among his many essays, we note his interest in the place of women in painting and the decorative arts: with La Femme dans l'art , published in 1893, he emphasized the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors founded in 1881 and places it in a larger historical framework. A year earlier, he worked on the exhibition The Arts of Women : he then engaged in a controversy as to the mission of the Union of Decorative Arts which had mounted the exhibition. Vachon's arguments target the mercantilist excesses of the association: he regrets that the Union is losing sight of its educational and museum mission to the benefit of wealthy private collectors. He is also known to be behind “the birth of the Museum of Art and Industry (1889)”, of which he was appointed curator on May 3, 1890 .
