Description: Small early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Poldon aged 11 - 1807. This little sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a scalloped swag with tassels and a bird at each end, all underlined with a floral border which has the following verse beneath Virtue the strongest beauty of the mindThe noblest ornament of human kindVirtue our safeguard and our guiding starThat stirs up reason when our sences (senses) errVirtue has secret charms which most men loveAnd those that do not love her must approve The verse has a tree, floral motif and two birds to both sides and is then underlined with a deep honeysuckle border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an expanse of grass with a hillock to the centre which has a flower bowl standing on top with a flower to each side of its topmost blooms. The hillock has a bird, tree, lion and tree flanked by a dog to its left and right with a flower basket above each lion, both baskets with a floral motif nearby. Mary's details and the date of 1807 run across the bottom edge of the linen, then the whole piece is surrounded by a triangulated long stitch border with a floral border across the top edge of the linen and above Mary's details etcThe linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, very slightly darker in places with a light crease running down the middle. There are also a few areas of damage, some having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. One is able to see through the damage that the sampler is sitting on a clean, similar coloured backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within an early 19th century water gilded frame which is in good condition with age related rubbing revealing the gesso beneath plus scratches, small chips and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" (sight size) and 12 3/4" x 14 1/2" including the frame. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION.
