He was a 17th century Spanish Jesuit priest who spent decades in what is today's Columbia among the African slaves. Although the Catholic Church had condemned and prohibited slavery, there was a flourishing trade in slaves for the mines and plantations of central America. He would actually enter the slave ships as they arrived, ministering the badly treated, terrified human cargo. When they were herded into pens in preparation for being sold, the saint would be there with medicine, food and drink, and with the help of interpreters and pictures, would give them basic instruction. Considering the slaves to be fellow Christians, he insisted that others treat them as such; and would visit the plantations and mines were they labored to see how they were being treated and to encourage them to continue their Christian faith. It was said that he baptized over 300,000 people, and that the slaves lives were improved through his efforts. He is still popular today especially among African Americans; the Knights of St Peter Claver is largest African American Catholic fraternal organization in the United States, based in New Orleans with units in Columbia and elsewhere.
