Description: [zipedit] Sweden Publicity Poster Stamp Poster stamp promoting peace, issued by the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society. According to Wikipedia: The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS) (Swedish: Svenska freds- och skiljedomsföreningen) is a non-governmental organization in Sweden, dedicated to peace, disarmament and democratization. It operates by methods including publishing, lobbying, activism and participating in political debates. SPAS has published an array of books and reports. The name of the organization's member's magazine is Pax. SPAS' central office is situated in Stockholm, headed by current president Agnes Hellström. However, there are about 20 local branches throughout Sweden. The society has a total of about 8500 members. According to the organization's website at svenskafreds.se: what was founded on April 2, 1883, is today the world's oldest yet active peace association - the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Association. It started as a reaction to plans for increased defense costs by 42 members of parliament. Liberal MP Klas Pontus Arnoldson was one of them and he is regarded as the founder of the association. He was awarded the first Swedish Nobel Peace Prize in 1908. The ideas the association fought for from the start follows as a red thread to this day: Against disarmament and war, for peaceful ways to resolve conflicts, for the right to refuse arms and against weapons. The fight against Swedish arms exports and nuclear disarmament has been going on for decades. The founders believed in resolving conflicts without violence, through arbitration, which was manifested in the name's second paragraph - the Arbitration Association. SUCCESS IN PEACE WORK • Svenska Freds formed opinion against and helped to stop a war between Norway and Sweden, at the dissolution of the union in 1905. • Swedish Peace demanded and gained the right to gun-free service as an alternative to military service in the 1920s. • Swedish Peace was involved in stopping the military's attempts to procure nuclear weapons during the 1950s and 1960s. • In the mid-1980s, Svenska Freds revealed Bofor's systematic arms smuggling, which reduced the number of buyers by one third. • Svenska Freds initiated the Swedish campaign against mines. Our work contributed to Sweden abolishing personal mines in its armed forces in 1996. This publicity poster stamp was probably issued in the mid to late 1940s - the image is signed "Gisiko 43". It is F/VF, OG, NH. NOTE: Blocks of 4 are available, pro-rata, while supplies last. Please indicate "4" in purchase quantity. After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs. A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described. * A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
