Description: The Blues Project was formed in 1965 in Greenwich Village by guitarist Danny Kalb, a blues guitarist with experiences in some folk-rock bands. Besides him there were guitarist Steve Katz, flautist and bassist Andy Kulberg, jazz drummer Roy Blumenfeld and rock singer Tommy Flanders. Sessionmen Al Kooper joined them later. Flanders left the band soon after the release of their first album ("Live At The Cafe Au Go Go"), recorded in november 1965. The group offers a blend of folk rock and electric blues, and even jazz and psychedelia, but their first album consists of blues and rock 'n' roll covers (Dixon, Waters, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley) and a couple of folk songs like "Violets Of Dawn" (Eric Andersen) and "Catch The Wind" (Donovan). That same year they released their second album "Projections" (their only full-lenght studio recording). In 1967 Al Kooper left the band and with Danny Kalb joined Blood, Sweat & Tears. A third album, Live at Town Hall, was a particularly half-assed project given the band's stature, pasted together from live tapes and studio outtakes, some of which were overdubbed with applause to give the impression that they had been recorded in concert. BS&T also included Katz (who stayed onboard for a long time). Blumenfeld and Kulberg kept the Blues Project going for a fourth album before forming Seatrain, and the group re-formed in the early '70s with various lineups, Kooper rejoining for a live 1973 album, Reunion in Central Park.
