Very handsome volume of this sole surviving work by Tryphiodorus, translated into English with notes and prefatory dissertation by James Merrick (1720-1769). Bound together with a second work, Tryphiodorus' text in the original Greek, with accompanying Latin translation and notes on the text. Edited by Merrick, with printing date 1741. James Merrick would be a Fellow at Trinity College in 1745. When The Destruction of Troy was published, he was just nineteen years old. The paper is crisp and white; the typefaces are varied and beautiful, for example the generous font of Merrick's dissertation, and the Greek font used for Tryphiodorus's text. Bookplate identifies this volume as coming from the collection of Robert J. Hayhurst. Robert John Hayhurst (1929-2016), born in Nelson, Lancashire, was a serious book collector. His library of over 8,000 volumes, which featured naval history and eighteenth-century literature in contemporary bindings, went to auction in the Spring of 2019.
