Description: THE SQUARE OF SEVENS, An Authoritative System of Cartomancy with a prefatory notice by E Irenaeus Stevenson was published 1900 in London, 1st British edition by George Redway measuring 7 5/8" x 5 1/4" with xxv + 72 pages, top page edge gilt, pictorial cover, red and black borders, decorations and figures. The book was previously published 1896 in New York by Harpers. E Irenaeus Stevenson presents this book as a "literary resurrection" of a 1735 work by Robert Antrobus titled The Square of Sevens, and The Parallelogram. The complicated way of dealing cards to foretell the future is now viewed as a literary hoax. (Mary K Greer) Edward Irenaeus Stevenson (1869-1942) also wrote under the name Xavier Mayne. He was an American novelist and journalist known for his 1906 novel Imre: A Memorandom which is regarded as the first with an openly gay theme.
