Description: Tonalist watercolor winter andscape by Bruce Crane (1857-1937), listed Connecticut/New York artist, 8 7/8"" by 14 7/8" watercolor on paper board, signed lower left, under Museum glass in 22K gilded carved reproduction frame, 12 3/8" by 18 3/8". Artist studied with Alexander Wyant in New York City, studied in Europe 1876-77, Art Students League of NY 1878-82, then returned to Europe to the art colony at Grez-sur-Loring, France, painting with Birge Harrison, Kenyon Cox and Wyant. He maintained a studio in NYC and in Old Lyme, CT, where he spent his summers starting 1904, moved to Bronxville, NY in 1914. He also painted in New Jersey, East Hampton of Long Island, Adirondacks, and Catskills. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, Society of American Artists, Grand Central Art Galleries, Lotus Club, Artists' Fund Society. Condition excellent for age, toning to back of board from previous framing wood backing, faint drip from time of creation in left upper quadrant; frame with a few tiny gilt losses.
