According to the jacket text, This book continues and expands the scope of the author's Caste and the Economic Frontier (1957), which described economic and political changes in an Oriya village, Bisipara, during the past hundred years. The present study, covering a longer period of time, discusses the social organization of a famous Indian tribal people, the Konds of Orissa, in the midst of whose territory the Oriya village of Bisipara lies. The author's main interest is in social change and in the meeting of three different social systems: the tribal system of the Konds; Oriya society, based upon caste; and the modern economic, political, and administrative systems. The book raises, therefore, from the point of view of politics, two problems of importance in modern India: the conflict of tribal peoples with their Hindu neighbours; and the role of the administrator and modern politician as instruments of social change in a backward area.
