Description: Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture and mechanical reproduction, pop artist Andy Warhol (1927-1987) created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. He first attracted attention with his exhibitions of pop art subjects from everyday life (Campbell's Soup Can, 1965; Green Coca-Cola Bottles, 1962). He also created a uniquely colorful series of portraits of celebrities such as portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. Warhol then ventured into experimental films, producing among others the seven-hour film The Chelsea Girls (1966). Rejecting the dominant painting and sculptural modes of his time, Warhol adopted screen printing to achieve his signature hard edges and flat lines of color. The artist was a mentor to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat and continues to influence contemporary art around the world. His provocative successors include Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons. Warhol has been the subject of exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern and the Center Pompidou, among other institutions. The artist, producer and publisher, who predicted that in the future everyone will enjoy 15 minutes of fame, is credited not only with reflecting and helping to shape American culture, but has also seen his works sell at auction for more than 100 million dollars.
