Description: Tsuchiya Koitsu lived and studied with Kiyochika for 19 years. Kiyochika was a pioneer of the Japanese shin hanga art movement. Kobayashi Kiyochika studied photography and the French impressionists and appreciated the importance of light and shadow. He then introduced these concepts to his students and into the old craft of traditional ukiyo-e. Tsuchiya Koitsu adopted these techniques from his master. Koitsu also made his prints more colorful than the more conventional woodblocks of the early twentieth century and shin hanga. His work was published by Watanabe, Doi and Others - This piece appears to be published by Doi, ca 1950 and seems to be relatively rare.
