Javanese Hindu Legend Ramayana Beautifully crafted handcrafted wooden puppet (Wayang Golek) Java, Indonesia. This exquisite vintage is beautifully carved and painted with the proper Javanese characteristics of a noble knight. This artwork stands proudly on display at approximately 27” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wayang goleks, typically from the West Java/Sunda area, were for centuries used to depict stories based on the Hindu epic Mahabharata or Ramayana, blending the Indian-based legend with the Javanese/Indonesian own flair of artistry. Carved out of wood, they have more lifelike and 3D features, and support a better sustainability after multiple performances. The stories are performed by the dalang, and contrary to a wayang kulit performance, the audience is seated in front of the small stage and can observe the wayang set, dalang, and orchestra. A typical performance lasts from sunset to shortly before sunrise, and the dalang is accompanied by a gamelan orchestra, and one or more female singers, who introduce the individual scenes and explainsthe course of events. This form of folk theater is usually performed in the village squares, courtyards, or the village roads and were usually lively and colouful, and dalangs usually use the theater to not only entertain but only to adapt to current events and comment on political and social conditions. Stories and the skills to magically carve a plain piece of wood into these marvellous artwork are handed down from one dalangs to another, from one generation to the next. This marvelous art form is slowly eroded and becoming extinct in the modern world, as fewer and fewer of the younger people are willing to continue the tradition and preserve the artform against the fast paced modernism and consumerism. The older dalangs and puppet makers are sadly passing on, most without someone else to continue carrying their torch. 2 Large Princess Wayang Golek puppets from the period 1920 Traditional shadow theater - from Java, Indonesia - In carved and hand painted wood. With a stem, a white face, a large polychrome headdress, finely chiseled and decorated with traditional floral motifs. Shoulders, arms, neck and chest with gold patina finish - The head is articulated by a control rod that runs through the entire body. The equally articulated arms are attached to the body by cords and manipulated using long wooden sticks - The costume, namely the traditional batik dress, is richly decorated with embroidery and trimmings (decorated with pearls, pompoms, rhinestones and pieces of metal) - In Indonesia puppets are also used during major religious festivals. Some slight paint losses from use given the age which in no way alter the charm of this very beautiful handcrafted item*****A beautiful piece. As décor, for a gift, or for your next performance! These puppets are larger than most I've seen. Really a thing of beauty. The repertoire of Wayang Golek puppet theater includes the Ramayana and the Mahabharata Hindu epics, as well as Islamic and indigenous folk tales. The colorful performances by puppet masters are accompanied by song and the Gamelan orchestra and are part of the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia. The wayangs I am offering are most respectfully handed down from the original Dalang Creators and Puppeteers of Indonesia and handed to the Eastern European Gypsies who then gave them to my Grandmother when she was a young girl living in Belgrade Yugoslavia. These beautiful women even accompanied her on the long journey by boat to Canada. These ladies were born in the 1900s a period when the highest quality of craftsmanship was a common practice. These puppets have been marvellously preserved, despite having lived through the war as well as the years of action in all of their performances. These are not the typical commercial copies with lower quality usually available on third party seller sites. These artfully crafted wayangs can be displayed under proper lighting as a collection, or serves as an exquisite gift that carries with them a legendary story as well as a cultural statement, and a unique piece of Worldly Art.
