We have truck farmed for 30+ years and use these vegetable varieties our-self on our Southern Illinois farm, Ukrainian Purple Tomatoes will be available at our farm stand this season as quickly as they ripen in the field. This year we have decided to offer the same seed varieties we grow for sale in our Ebay store. Tomatoes are purple, bordering on chocolate brown in color, occasionally with a bit of green in the shoulders. Their flavor is rich, full-bodied and juicy, especially for a plum type. A great all-purpose variety for slicing or canning. Harvests begin approximately 75 days from transplant..Plants do best in full sun, tomatoes need 1-2" of water a week. We like to start our tomatoes in the greenhouse 6-8 weeks before setting them in the field. I find setting our tomatoes on 3 foot wide black synthetic mulch in very beneficial, in as much as it retains heat in the early spring, retains moisture when the weather gets dry, and retards weed growth all season.
