Uncle Tom's Cabin ~ 1852 ~ Harriet Beecher Stowe ~ First Edition ~ Abolition

Description: ..the heart has no tears to give,--it drops only blood, bleeding itself away in silence. Here we offer the first edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe's iconic novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, published by John P. Jewett & Company, Boston, in 1852, in two volumes; the first part within the stated eightieth print run (of a thousand copies per run) and the second part in the stated 20th printing. When President Lincoln met Stowe in 1862, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war;” as Stowe's writing turned the chilling abolitionist slavery narratives of the period into a melodrama that inspired the emotions of the world. The work was rapidly translated into a number of forms, becoming the most sensational play of the 19th Century. The book sold more copies than all but the Bible. Both volumes have been rebound with new spine cloth and hinges. Volume Two additionally has a new front board. Boards are well worn and worn through at edges (please see pics.) Foxing and light staining throughout, as is usual for this title, especially One, which was printed on slightly more acidic stock. The bindings are very tight and square, the text is very bright and crisp. 312 and 322 pages, respectively. Books measure approximately 7.75 x 5.25-inches. This iconic first set will make a wonderful centerpiece to your collection or a very thoughtful gift. Please click HERE to see the other abolition-related novels and narratives we offer. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer?
