URBAN LEGEND (Michael Paul, published by Mental Playground productions, 2011) --I have been intrigued by the Razor Blade trick ever since I saw the "Vest Pocket Razor Blade Trick" in my first E-Z Magic catalog. The idea of putting some razor blades in my mouth with some thread, swallowing them, and then magically regurgitating them not only without harming myself, but also threading them all on the thread! Well, that seems pretty cool to me when I was 13-years-old.It still seems cool, but over the years, I found that most methods for the razor blade trick required some strange holder or other prop that never felt innocent or normal in the context of the trick. And it seems that Michael Paul felt the same way -- he mentions wanting to do the trick without resorting to ornate stands, wallets or other devices which seem out of place. He wanted to just put the blades in his mouth, put the thread in, and then pull them out threaded.And that is pretty much what he teaches here. His version uses only two razor blades, some dental floss, and an apple. The blades are stuck in the apple to start. Using one of the blades, he slices a piece off the apple. Then he takes the two blades and places them in his mouth. Hands are definitely empty as they get the blades from the apple, and after the blades are left in his mouth. Now a piece of floss is pulled from its floss holder, and placed in his mouth. Again, hands are completely free of anything else but the floss, and empty as they come away from his mouth. Finally, after a few grimaces, a blade emerges from between his lips, and slowly drops down in front of him, dangling from the floss, until finally the second blade also emerges from his lips. Both blades are threaded on the floss.Paul gives a number of good reasons for using only two blades, and I tend to agree with his reasoning. The effect is still spectacular, and can be accomplished much more cleanly and effectively. He also includes a complete patter story that makes the use of razor blades in your act understandable. (He plays this routine in a serious, macabre vein, which also heightens the mystery, rather than the more frequently seen comedy presentation of the razor blade trick)This trick is not dangerous if you follow all the instructions and don't do anything dumb. But it does require you to handle razor blades, and so please don't buy this if you are not a responsible and sensible adult. In buying this, you take full responsibility for any injury you may cause to yourself.
