Description: Here is an attractive and desirable lot of the first day covers (all cacheted, all unaddressed) of all 23 US stamp issues of 1962. The 1962 US stamp program featured several firsts. The Project Mercury stamp, issued on the day that John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth, was our country's first space stamp, while the Christmas issue was the first in US history. That stamp proved so popular that nearly one billion of them were printed and sold. The months of October and November marked a unique situation in postal history. Some printings of the Dag Hammarskjold stamp, released on October 23, had some of the stamp's yellow color missing, leaving white patches on the stamp. Rather than allow these misprints to become expensive collectors' items, Postmaster General J. Edward Day ordered another issue of the Hammarskjold stamp, this time with the error included. This stamp came out on November 16, and some labeled this intentionally-produced error stamp as "Day's Folly." In all, this collection contains all 23 US stamp issues for 1962. They are: 1/6/1962 Scott 1191 4¢ New Mexico Statehood 2/14/1962 Scott 1192 4¢ Arizona Statehood 2/20/1962 Scott 1193 4¢ Project Mercury 3/30/1962 Scott 1194 4¢ Eradicate Malaria 4/7/1962 Scott 1179 4¢ Battle of Shiloh 4/11/1962 Scott 1195 4¢ Charles Evans Hughes 4/25/1962 Scott 1196 4¢ Seattle World's Fair 4/30/1962 Scott 1197 4¢ Louisiana Statehood 5/20/1962 Scott 1198 4¢ Homestead Act 7/24/1962 Scott 1199 4¢ Girl Scouts 7/28/1962 Scott 1200 4¢ Brien McMahon and Atomic Energy 8/31/1962 Scott 1201 4¢ Apprenticeship 9/16/1962 Scott 1202 4¢ Sam Rayburn 10/23/1962 Scott 1203 4¢ Dag Hammarskjold 11/1/1962 Scott 1205 4¢ Christmas 11/14/1962 Scott 1206 4¢ Education 11/16/1962 Scott 1204 4¢ Dag Hammarskjold (intentional error) 11/23/1962 Scott 1213 5¢ George Washington 11/23/1962 Scott 1229 5¢ George Washington Coil 12/5/1962 Scott C64 8¢ Jetliner Over Capitol Air Mail 12/5/1962 Scott C65 8¢ Jetliner Over Capitol Air Mail Coil 12/5/1962 Scott C64b 8¢ Jetliner Over Capitol Air Mail Booklet Pane 12/15/1962 Scott 1207 4¢ Winslow Homer All 23 covers are clean, fresh, and unaddressed.
