Description: BILLIE HOLIDAY: Body and Soul. Used reissue mono LP, superb Japanese pressing in Mint/Mint condition. Verve Records Catalog # UMV 2597. Reissue released 1981 Condition: Vinyl is flawless, I did not hear a single pop or tick when I played this record to digitize its contents. This pressing is superior to any Mobile Fidelity item I have ever owned!! LP jacket remains in excellent condition. Though I bought this decades ago, I think my recent exploration of it was first and only time I have played it. This is what happens when you buy stuff more rapidly than you can enjoy it! Behind the Music: To paraphrase a famous marketing slogan, “Nobody doesn’t like ‘Lady Day’!” These sessions from 1957 are from late in Billie Holiday’s career, predating the Lady in Satin album for Columbia, on which the voice had gotten raggedy from years of very hard living. (Billie died in 1959, around age 44.) PERSONNEL: Billie Holiday, vocals; Jimmy Rowles, piano; Ben Webster, tenor sax; Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, trumpet; Barney Kessel, guitar (providing some bass notes in absence of an acoustic bass); Alvin Stoller or Larry Bunker, drums. The sessions were doubtless produced by Norman Granz, founder of Verve, though he is only credited with “supervision.” The performances run longer than earlier recorded versions by ‘Lady Day,’ and are: the title tune; “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”; “Darn That Dream”; “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off”; “Comes Love” (a great song!); “Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good to You”; “Embraceable You”; “Moonlight in Vermont.” About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow. New items added weekly, check back often! PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely. FREE SHIPPING to U.S. address for purchase of any item of $100 or more.
