Description: The jealousy glass, a.k.a polemoscope, private eye, side angle viewer, was invented by the German-Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in 1637. Hevelius believed his invention could have military uses, but the viewing angle was found to be too narrow. During the 18th century, patrons of the opera began using the polemoscope to spy on the activities of fellow theater goers. Imagine England's Queen Elizabeth attending a performance at London's Albert Hall, using a polemoscope to spy on the beautiful Duchess of Gloucester sitting in the next box!In 1973 the jealousy glass began appearing in gift shops manufactured by Van Cort a well-known kaleidoscope maker under the name Private Eye. It has since been discontinued. However a precious few are still available to collectors, inventors, and C.I.A. operatives in a variety of conditions and prices here on eBay and other platforms. The Van Cort instrument I am offering has never been used, certainly not for spying, and will ship to you in the original gift box.
