Description: This is a beautifull and rare example of early Stourbridge Spangle Glass. This Coral design made with mica was developed by John Northwood II and a specialty of his while he worked at Stevens & Williams. Arranging silver mica to form a pattern of coral is not an easy thing to do while working with different hot layers of glass. These pieces were made c. 1910 and you don't see many of them today. The vibrant colors with the Silver Mica arranged to look like coral make this piece very attractive. This is a 5 1/4" wide by 5 1/2" long by 7 1/4" tall basket is Blue glass lined with white opal glass. The silver mica design then carefully marvered and then cased in clear crystal was a lot of very exacting work. Then a crystal Thorn handle was applied. The pontil is ground. The shape of the basket is the melon shape. It took a great deal of skill and time to do this which accounts for the rarity of this type of art glass found today. It is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks and no stains or mineral deposit inside. Any unusual white or dark spots shown in the photos are from camera glare. This will make a great accessory to any Victorian home.
