VICTORIAN LADY ON THE TEXAS FRONTIER C. Richard King HC DJ Ann Raney Coleman -X1

Description: VICTORIAN LADY ON THE TEXAS FRONTIER The Journal of Ann Raney Coleman Edited by C. Richard King Frontispiece ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hard cover with dust jacket; 206 Pages; Size Approx. 5 X 7 3/4. Published by University of Oklahoma Press; copyright 1971. Details: "I was requested by some of the ladies to put a piece of cotton in my ears," wrote Ann Raney Coleman, describing her experiences in a ditch during the Civil War while Yankee shells exploded around her, "but this I declined to do as I would rather hear all that was going on." Such charmingly understated comments abound in this book, the journal of a spunky girl who left England with her mother and sister to come to Texas in 1832 and who was adept at hearing, seeing, and recording the personal and historical events that made up her daily life. Mrs. Coleman faced the hardship and tragedy common to early Texas with courage and resourcefulness. She could ride a horse under the most adverse circumstances, and she was an experienced seafarer. She knew how to live in poverty as well as comfort. She buried one husband, divorced another, and watched her children die. She lived to the age of eighty-seven and made her own living past her seventy-fourth year. She had a knack for being in the center of action: the early preparations for the Texas "strugel for independence," the Runaway Scrape, and the Federal attack on the Texas Gulf Coast in the Civil War. While boarding with Jane Long, "the Mother of Texas," Mrs. Coleman associated with the McNeels and other leaders of the province, and she wrote down her experiences in a clear, energetic style, painting her characters sharply and with decided opinions about them all. The result is social history as viewed by a perceptive woman." (taken from the dust jacket flaps) The book has a light blue cloth binding with a purple title panel on the spine, gilt lettering. The endpapers are purple. There is a frontispiece of Ann Raney Coleman. This would make a nice addition to your collection of historic biographies! Condition: This is an ex-library book with all of the usual markings and attachments. The dust jacket was taped to the book so there is residue from the tape on the covers (see pictures) and a little stain from the tape on the free endpapers. The lower edge of the covers and endpapers have damp stains; otherwise the book is in good condition with a firm binding and clean pages. The dust jacket is in a clear mylar protective covering and is in very good condition. Free Domestic Economy Shipping! Be sure to add me to your favorites list! Check out my other items!
