Description: The Empire Strikes Back (also known as Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) is a 1980 American epic space opera film based on a story by George Lucas. The sequel to Star Wars (1977), it is the second film in the Star Wars film series and the fifth chronological chapter of the "Skywalker Saga". Released on May 21, 1980, the highly anticipated sequel became the highest-grossing film that year, earning approximately $401.5 million worldwide. Unlike its lighthearted predecessor, Empire met with mixed reviews from critics, and fans were conflicted about its darker and more mature themes (The Good Guys didn't win). Since its release, The Empire Strikes Back is now often regarded as the best film in the Star Wars series and among the greatest films ever made. The Empire Strikes Back toy series was released from 1980 to 1982, and broken up into three primary waves. The first wave of Empire Strikes Back figures contained 11 in total, which brought the total number of Star Wars action figures to 31. Expectations were very high for the new Star Wars merchandise, and Kenner certainly did not disappoint. There were 29 new figures in total that were released during the Empire Strikes Back line. This offering are the original Wave 1 Action Figures release. All accessories are original to the action figure in 1980 and are Kenner OEM (no 3D printing or reproductions): Bossk (Complete): Bossk was among the Bounty Hunters in the infamous scene that captured everyone’s imagination. Despite only a handful of seconds on screen, Bossk was forever immortalized in the super cool character category. Bossk can still be found, but it’s getting tougher each year and comes with his original Bossk Rifle. For this action figure, there is a small spot on the inside of one of his legs (photographed) Bespin Security Guard (Complete): The Bespin Security Guard comes with the apply named Bespin Blaster. A second Security Guard was released in the Third Wave, but this was the original, dressed in his very fancy security uniform with a lot of scroll work on the edges of the uniform, highlighted in gold (Lando had to pick that uniform out, he had a way with style). FX-7 (Complete): Unlike the others, FX-7 didnt come with any accessories but it should be noted that this Droids head could extend, retract, and rotate. This was a pretty neat figure since you could use him for many other things other than medical stuff, such as Security, Trash Collector, Food Server, Nanny Droid, Etc. Han Solo (Hoth) (Complete): This was a great new figure of our favorite smuggler in his Hoth outfit. Along with the Tauntaun and Hoth playsets, this figure was a great addition to the line. He comes with the same blaster as was issued with all the Han action figures. For this figure, there is a minor amount of overspray that occurred during the manufacturing process. Hoth Han can still be found, but it’s getting tougher each year. IG-88 (Complete): Along with Bossk, IG-88 really captured the imagination as everyone who watched the movie were all dying to know more about these new Bounty Hunters. A lot of detail went into this figure, which really makes him standout from the crowd. Unlike many of the other action figures, IG-88 comes with two weapons: a Blaster and a Long Rifle. IG-88 can still be found, but it’s getting tougher each year to find him complete. Imperial Stormtrooper (Hoth) (Complete): This was really an incredible evolution of the already beloved Stormtrooper characters. Like the other Stormtroopers, this one has moveable arms and legs but his head is fixed. Who wouldn’t want dozens of these guys for their Battle of Hoth re-creations. His Accessories include both a Stormtrooper Rifle and a Vinyl Cape (not sure what purpose this served in an arctic environment, but it make him look cool). Lando Calrissian (Complete): Han Solo's "friend" and owner of the Mellianium Falcon before him, Lando is the coolest cat in the entire galaxy. Like the others, Lando was originally released from 1980-1982 and comes with both is Bespin Blaster & Vinyl Cape. For this action figure, there is a small spot in the inside of the cape (photographed). Leia Organa (Bespin Gown) (Complete): For Empire, we get a new sculpt of Princess Leia wearing her new gown she acquired on Cloud City. The vinyl robe also has a design printed on the outside, which is a nice detail instead of the solid color Kenner typically included with the action figures. Along with the robe, Leia's other accessory was the same Blaster as was included with the original Star Wars Leia. Rebel Soldier (Hoth) (Complete): The Hoth Rebel Soldier was an awesome troop building figure, especially for all the various Hoth playsets Kenner made for this line. It was simply made but very effective for what it was. This action figure comes with his original Rebel Rifle. Yoda (Complete): Despite the extremely limited articulation, this was a very cool figure. Two different snake variations were produced, with one being orange in color and the other was brown. There was a higher level of accessories that came with Yoda, including his Stick, Cloth Robe, Belt, and Snake Luke Skywalker (Bespin Fatigues) (Not Complete, missing accessories): Kenner gave us a great new sculpt of Luke for this one, along with a new lightsaber for him to hold, as Kenner decided to ditch their arm extending lightsabers. This figure came in two versions, one with blonde hair, the other with brown hair. Luke can still be found, but it’s getting tougher each year. This is an action figure only and does not include either his Blaster or Yellow Lightsaber These are great examples of original 1st Wave Empire Strikes Back toys.
