Description: These books were originally given away with boxes of Whitman Chocolates around 1916, but due to their popularity they became a popular series of literature which one could purchase for a dime by sending in an order blank from magazines such as National Geographic.Eventually they became available to purchase at Woolworths.While the very early versions had a tan leather cover, what we have here are the early 1920’s printing, with a faux leather, or “leatherette” green cover.They are referred to as the Redcroft Editions, as that is what is I bossed on the back cover of each book.Research indicates that there were a total of 101 titles printed over the years, we have 12 books here.They were found in a corner of a family members attic.The edges of the books show at least some minimal shelf wear.They do have some ripples from weather and being hidden all these years.They do not smell musty.After all of these years the paper is tanned / mellow, and you must handle these books with care, but they are delightful.A nice gift for the collector, read them or simply display them.These tiny treasures have become highly collectible.They are considered the first mini books.Petite, precious and highly sought after, their noble time-worn pages and embossed covers attest to their age, circa 1921.These miniature books measure 3 ¼” x 4”.Collectors know that these classic miniature volumes were the first pocket books, small enough to literally fit into a pocket.These extraordinary tiny volumes have been bumped, rubbed, stuffed into pockets and read over 90 years ago.Published by the Little Leather Corporation of New York.They were first designed for and became popular with soldiers during World War !.They could be easily carried by our troops since the tiny books fit easily into their shirt pockets.The war influenced the marketing of the Little Leather Library.They were bought as gifts for soldiers serving abroad.The books were sold as something that will make their minds normal, and keep them normal.
