Description: A fantastic paperback book example of VINTAGE Ethnographic Photography from 1933. The book is titled “The BANTU TRIBES OF SOUTH AFRICA Reproductions of Photographic Studies by A. M. Dugan-Cronin - Vol. II, Section III, Plates LIII - LXXVIII THE SUTO-CHUANA TRIBES SUB-GROUP III THE SOUTHERN BASOTHO” With an introductory article on the Southern Basotho and Descriptive Notes on the Plates by G. P. Lestrade. Printed at the Cambridge University Press for Cambridge Deighton, Bell & Co., Ltd. Kimberly Alexander McGregor Memorial Museum. The book measures approximately 11.5 by 8.25 inches. Pages numbered 59-80 have an essay on the Southern Basotho and this is followed by 26 plates printed one to a page. Please see the photos I have posted as one provides a list of the plates in the book. I have shown some of the compelling portraits as well and these seem reminiscent of the work of Edward Curtis or August Sander. I love the printing quality and suspect it is some form of gravure or photogravure and there is an indentation around each photo from the printing plate, I believe. The covers show their age and there is creasing to the spine. The interior pages are free of writing or underlining. The book has been bumped at the base and this shows at the bottom of the pages towards the back of the book. It does not affect any of the photographs or texts. Keywords: Pieter Hugo, South Africa, Bantu, Basotho, Zanele Muholi, colonialism, apartheid, African photography The book will be carefully bubblewrapped, securely packaged in a box and shipped from New York via USPS Media Mail.
