On September 1, 1939, the Nazis invaded Poland, and World War II was launched, a deadly global conflict waged across Europe and the Pacific until 1945. World War II was global in nature. The aggressors had global designs and the defenders had to counter them around the world and fight on varied terrain on three continents and many seas. The war started a revolution in map-making. It didn’t just change maps, but it also changed how the world looked at maps. Maps were essential to grasp WWII’s magnitude and sweep, and anticipating the political changes that would result from the eventual end of World War II. C.S. Hammond issued this Atlas in 1943, in the midst of WWII, with a corresponding coupon that promised the reader a supplement to make this an updated Atlas. “This new Atlas shows political divisions of Europe and the World as of date of publication. No boundaries will change officially until after the War & when peace treaties have been signed. When boundaries have been settled, the publishers of this Atlas will issue a supplement showing all changes brought about by the War, to bring this book up to date thereafter.” The coupon was never redeemed for this Atlas and can be found on the bottom of the front page.
