Description: This large, 10.5" long tin fire truck marked FD 6097 is a robust battery-operated toy made by Nomura Toys ("TN" mark) in Japan in the late 1950's or early 1960's. This vintage ladder truck carries a driver plus three other firefighter figures, two at the rear and one on the left side holding a flag. It is a highly detailed model with a lot of interesting features. The battery compartment is really clean and takes two D size cells (not included). The white lever on the right side of the vehicle has 3 positions with OFF in the middle. There is also a metal lever to the left of the ladder. When the metal lever is in the forward position, the white lever controls the vehicle motion (forward to drive the truck forward, backward to reverse the truck.) In both directions, the firefighter waves his flag. These motions work well. The front wheels can also be manually set to allow the truck to move in circles. When the metal lever is moved to the rear position, the white lever now controls the operation of the ladder. Moving the white lever backward is supposed to raise the ladder and then extend it. Moving the lever forward should lower the ladder. These motions do not work properly, although the motor runs and the gears move and the ladder will eventually raise but not extend, so likely an adjustment is needed. Sold as-is. The condition of the litho on this piece is really very good, with just a few nicks and scratches from light playwear on the topside, as shown in the photos. There is a small spot of corrosion on the left of the rear platform, and some scratches on the underside, but overall this vintage toy is complete and still in great condition.
