In Russia and the CIS, coasters are traditionally used in railway transport as an indispensable element of table setting (their use significantly increases the stability of glasses). In addition, coasters serve to remove heat so that glasses do not burst when boiling water is poured into them. It is believed that cup holders of a modern form appeared in Russian passenger trains when Sergei Witte was the director of the Department of Railway Affairs of the Ministry of Finance (since 1889) and the Minister of Railways of the Russian Empire (in 1892). The largest production of glass holders is located in the city of Kolchugino, Vladimir Region, at the cutlery and tableware plant, founded by the merchant Alexander Kolchugin in the 19th century as part of a metallurgical manufactory (currently, production is located in the 7th shop of consumer goods of the Kolchugtsvetmet plant).
