Description: Nice artistic vase that accents the birch wood it is made from. This vase also has historical value and a story. It is from Bulgaria in the 1970's, when Eastern Europe was part of the Soviet block, and reflects life in the region at that time. My husband is Czech, and he traveled to Bulgaria on vacation with his parents - they could not go to countries outside of the block. Handcrafted items like this vase were popular because it was one of the few allowed opportunities for people to make extra money. Also, as there was little opportunity, people become highly skilled in areas such as woodworking, and produced thoughtful, artistic, well made pieces using commonly found (and probably free) items. This vase is one such item. These pieces could take hours or days to make, but the artist had time. The other side of the equation is the buyer. By the 70's the economic system was not working, and there were shortages of quality items to buy for the household. Handmade items were a way of filling the void. This is a really nice piece, but we have so much. this needs to go forth and continue the story.
