Description: Vintage or antique solid sterling silver medium-sized but sturdy (approx. 1 1/2" tall with bale and jump ring; weight approx. 3.5 g) Orthodox Crucifix pendant featuring a wood texture design of the classic Slavonic Orthodox 3-bar Savior's Cross with detailed iconic image of the Crucified Savior over the skull (Adam's head), and words of the traditional Orthodox "Protection" prayer on the reverse. The reverse also bears the "925" hallmark indicating the "sterling" purity. It has been confirmed using the silver acid test. The pendant has visible vintage or antique appearance with signs of aging and wear that might include diminished quality of the artwork, deformations of its original shape, scratches, dents, and patches of discoloration/patina. The necklace bale and soldered jump ring show signs of wear consistent with long continuous wearing of the pendant. The size and weight of the item are shown on the photographs for this listing. The pendant is shaped as a three-bar Suppedaneum cross. The three-bar cross is venerated as the true Savior's Cross in the Slavonic Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches. Such a cross has three horizontal crossbeams: the top one represents the "INRI" nameplate, and the bottom one, a footrest. The footrest crossbeam is depicted pointing up, toward Heaven, on Christ's right hand side where the Penitent thief, St. Dismas was crucified. The obverse bears an image of the Crucifixion recreated according to the ancient Orthodox iconographic tradition. The Savior is depicted with the large halo around His head and the Sacred Name of Jesus inscribed as the "IC XC" Greek Christogram just above His shoulders. The nameplate placed on the Cross just above the head of Jesus shows the "INRI" abbreviation made in Cyrillic transliteration as "IНЦI" on this cross. In addition, the top line of the title shows a two-word Church Slavonic inscription meaning "King of Glory", a traditional part of the Orthodox title of Jesus inscribed on the Savior's Cross. The bottom vertical crossbar (the footrest) incorporates a smaller Greek "NIKA" ("VICTORIOUS") inscription made in a Cyrillic transliteration as "HИKA", an ancient symbol of Christ's victory over sin and death achieved on the Cross. The power of sin and death defeated by Jesus is also visualized using an image of the skull, or Adam's head, buried below the Savior's Cross. The image refers to Golgotha (Calvary), the elevated site where Jesus was crucified, which the Bible says means "the place of the skull" in Hebrew. According to ancient tradition of the Church, it was also the burial place of the first man, Adam. The reverse displays an inscription of the traditional Slavonic Orthodox prayer meaning "Save and Protect" incorporated into the central horizontal crossbar of the pendant. The prayer reminds us that Christ the Savior is with us to save and protect a person wearing the cross from every evil and all enemies visible and invisible.
