Description: I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare broadside (single page playbill) from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the musical comedy flop "WHAT A DAY!" (later retitled "GREAT TO BE ALIVE!") in Philadelphia. (The production would open March 23rd, 1950 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and close after only 52 performances.) ..... Originally titled "WHAT A DAY!" during its out-of-town tryouts, the ensemble cast included VIVIENNE SEGAL, STUART ERWIN, VALARIE BETTIS, MARK DAWSON, MARTHA WRIGHT, BAMBI LINN, LEONARD ELLIOTT (replaced out-of-town by EARL OXFORD), J. C. McCORD, ROD ALEXANDER, RUSSELL NYPE, LULU BATES, DAVID NILLO, DON KENNEDY, PAUL REED, SWEN SWENSON (in what would be his Broadway debut) and JANICE RULE ..... CREDITS: Music by ABRAHAM ELLSTEIN; Book by WALTER BULLOCK and SYLVIA REGAN; Lyrics by WALTER BULLOCK; Sets and Costumes designed by STEWART CHANEY; Choreographed by HELEN TAMIRIS; Directed by MARY HUNTER; Produced by VINTON FREEDLEY in association with ANDERSON LAWLER and RUSSELL MARKERT ..... DETAILS: The single page, two-sided playbill measures 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and list of musical numbers, but no cast photos or bios ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor creasing, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard .....
