Installation of the Expansion Unit, with its 16k bytes of RAM (random access memory), doubles the amount of RAM on the HX-20. This means that you can have larger, more powerful programs and use more memory for variables and arrays. The Expansion Unit also has sockets for up to 32k bytes of ROM (read only memory). This allows large programs to be permanently stored in the HX-20 and instantly available for use. Because of the Expansion Unit's compact design, it is easily mounted onto the HX-20, where it becomes an integral and permanent part of the computer. The power source built into the HX-20 provides power for the memory in the Expansion Unit. No external power source is required for operation, and programs and data stored in the Expansion Unit's memory are protected when the HX-20 is turned off. The expansion port allows hardware to connect directly to the master processor's memory bus, exposing the 16-bit address bus, 8-bit data bus and control signals. An external device can add ROMs, RAM or MMIO-devices to the master CPU's address space. The address range 0x4000-0x5FFF has no internal mapping and is thus a good range for external hardware, but the internal ROMs (0x6000-0xFFFF) can be disabled as well using the ROM enable pin so the entire range 0x4000-0xFFFF can be used.The world's first hand-held computer, the HX-20 (called the HC-20 in Japan), was created by bringing together Epson's core technologies. Incorporating a multitude of functions in a body with an A4 footprint, the computer weighed a mere 1.6 kg. In addition to being lightweight and compact, the HX-20 came with a nickel-cadmium battery that allowed it to be used on the go and off the grid for up to 50 hours. Easily transported anywhere, the HX-20 can rightfully be called the forerunner of the modern mobile PC. The HX-20 drew widespread attention when it was exhibited at shows in Tokyo (the Data Show and the Microcomputer Show) and introduced outside Japan, where it was hailed as a new model for computers and was even called "the fourth revolution in personal computing." The one model of the HX-20 became an astonishing bestseller. One-quarter of a million units were sold, as the product caught on not only in the personal computer market, which was the original target, but also in factories, where it was used to control production line and other operations.
