VTG African BAMILEKE Statue Female Fertility Beaded Tribal Art Cameroon 22" 1970

Description: VINTAGE African Beaded Bamileke Statue Fertility Female Tribal Art Cameroon 22" This incredible African beaded female fertility stature has been carved from solid wood, wrapped in a burlap type material and then beaded with thousands of colorful glass beads. This unique Bamileke figure depicts a pregnant woman with a beaded apron, beaded headdress and shoes. The beadwork is beautiful. I found this beauty and three other African artifacts at an Estate sale. These were sold by the brother of the man who had brought them back from Africa but he had since passed away and he didn't know much about them. This one was almost solid black and I gently tried to clean the beads to reveal the color but you could clean her up even more if desired. You can see the material at the bottom of the shoes where she has been sewn. This statue is very heavy and is 22" tall, and 8" across at the arms. There is a lot of info on line about the Bamileke tribe and some of their art. He also told me that his brother had purchased all 3 items in a town or area called Gabon but most info on line said these were probably from Cameroon. I am so intrigued with this statue while I also find it a bit odd and strange. It is in excellent condition and I don't see any beads loose or missing. His brother said that they had been in the trunk for over 30 years so that was probably what kept it in good although dirty condition. I wish I had more information as I could not find anything exactly like this one which appears to be female and pregnant and probably holds some tribal static of power with her colorful apron and headdress.
