Description: Nice vintage 1950's USS Constellation medal/coin. Front depicts the ship with "U.S. FRIGATE CONSTELLATION" encircling it, and date "1797" at bottom; Reverse has eagle with shield containing 15 stars and "THIS COIN STRUCK FROM PARTS OF THE FRIGATE CONSTELLATION THE FIRST SHIP OF THE U.S. NAVY" with cannons on either side. Beautifully designed, this medal was struck containing medal from copper spikes that were recovered from the ship during the restoration effort. Several companies have struck the medal including Whitehead & Hoag and Bastian Brothers Inc. More recently Phil Markman and Co of Baltimore arranged for the striking of the medals, this time from new dies. I do not know which strike this medal is from. BONUS: I have included an article on this medal which provides additional information; however I do not know the date this Q/A was printed. In good shape; however tarnish/wear evident (see pic's); measures approx 1-1/4" diameter.
