Description: A fine early modernist hand colored lithograph by Berlin Secessionist artist Walter Klemm (1883-1957). The image depicts a scene from a Mozart opera and is from Klemm's 1923 series of seven lithographs titled "Die Entfürung aus dem Serail" (The Abduction from the Seraglio). It is hand signed in pencil by the artist and also heightened with Klemm's own hand coloring. The image measures approx. 6 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches, sheet size is approx. 9 1/2 x 8 inches and it is printed in brown ink on handmade watermarked Drey Könige laid paper. It is in excellent condition, no mat burn or tape residue and it does not appear to have ever been framed or matted. Walther (Walter) Klemm (1883-1957) was born in Karlsbad, Austria-Hungary and studied with Kolo Moser at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. After graduation, he exhibited with the Vienna Secession in 1904. Klemm spent some time working in Prague, but moved in 1908 to Germany along with his friend, the artist Carl Thiemann, where they settled at the Dachau artist colony and both joined the Berlin Secession and Deutscher Künstlerbund. From 1913, Klemm headed the graphics department at the Weimar Academy, which became part of the Bauhaus from 1919 to 1925. Through this time, Klemm remained uninfluenced by his colleagues, Klee, Kandinsky, and Feiniger and held true to his own vision. Today, Klemm's work can be seen in virtually every major museum in the German speaking world as well as the British Museum in London and several of his prints are held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
