Description: Russian February 1917 Revolution Jetton "To Freedom Fighters", February - November 1917. This attractive medal in Art Nouveau Style was manufactured by the Kuchkin Factory in Moscow during the Provisional Government period prior to the Bolshevik usurpation of power later that year. This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL item from 1917, not a replica! The medallion is made in so-called “white metal” (a heavy alloy of copper and zinc), measures 33.9 mm tall (incl. eyelet), 27.9 mm wide; weighs 9.6 grams not including the suspension and connecting link. The obverse has a portrait of medieval Russian knight executed in distinctive Art Nouveau manner. The reverse features a shield with inscription "To Fighters for Freedom" and the date 1917 on top. The medal is in FAIR to GOOD condition – not bad for an original antique piece that is over 100 years old! There is significant amount of pitting throughout as is typical of period medals made in base metal rather than gold or silver. The corrosion to the surface hides some of the details, especially along the edge where one could find the raised maker mark "D. Kuchkin Factory, Moscow". Some of the letters of the maker mark (located on the reverse at the bottom) are still discernible, albeit with difficulty. There are also some minor dings and wear to high points throughout, but the main details of the artwork – as well as all characteristic signs that the medal is indeed original - are still well-defined. The jetton is free of nicks or significant edge knocks. The medal comes on a custom-made suspension that appears to be of the period or at least not much more recent than the jetton itself, probably as worn by the original recipient. The ribbon, albeit it shows age, is a replacement; although it is similar to the St. George ribbon that was originally used with this jetton, it is actually a more recent ribbon for the Soviet Medal for Victory over Germany or the Order of Glory. Note that it is sewn onto the suspension with thread, a much more laborious process than a standard Soviet-era suspension would require. A very distinctive looking and historically interesting award was made in 1917 soon after the February Revolution, during the short period of Provisional Government prior to the Bolshevik takeover in November. Because it is in far less than perfect condition, we are offering it at a BARGAIN price! Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
