Description: Soviet WW2 Medal for the Defense of Stalingrad. This is a GUARANTEED ORIGINAL WW2 issue Soviet medal, NOT a reproduction or post-war reissue. The medallion is made in brass and measures 32.1 mm wide; weighs 16.3 grams not including the suspension and connecting link. The front has Russian inscription “For the Defense of Stalingrad” and the line of Red Army soldiers on the forefront with an unfurled Soviet banner and airplanes and tanks in the background. On the reverse is the motto “For Our Soviet Motherland!” The medal is in fair to good condition. Both sides have many tiny, barely noticeable dings, contact marks, and light scratches (mostly on the reverse), but are free from nicks, edge bumps or any other significant wear. The raised details of the artwork and lettering are very well-preserved. There is a moderate amount of tarnish throughout and a few minor blemishes, none of them too detractive. The medal comes on an aluminum suspension device of late Cold War era (Soviet veterans often wore their medals with pride, so both the ribbons and suspensions were frequently replaced as needed.) The ribbon shows age and use, but it is still perfectly sound and clean. The connecting link between the medal and suspension appears to be original to the medal, and its ends are still joined with solder.Issued to one of the Soviet participants of what was probably the bloodiest single battle in all history and certainly the most important turning point in WW2. The Soviet casualties, well over a million in most estimates, were even more appalling, but unlike Germany, the Soviet Union could afford them. With the defeat at Stalingrad, any chances of German victory in the East were finally and irrevocably put to rest.
