They are covered in a thin layer of cosmoline for long term protection from corrosion and it has worked. The first six bayonets pictured above are stock photos of bayonets cleaned of the cosmoline. The last four pictures are of a bayonet with the cosmoline coating. Cosmoline can be removed with very hot water and Dawn dish soap. Gun cleaning solvent works as well.
